Intelligence Analysis Course

Key areas covered during the course are:

History of Intelligence and Analysis, NIM, Creative Thinking Techniques, and Collection Planning

• Crime Pattern Analysis. Lecture and discussion regarding misconceptions, good practice, and expectations of the Client, and the ability to work to Organisational Objectives.

• Partnership Working and Community Problem Solving approaches. Strategic in nature.

• Comparative Case Analysis. This technique can be used to enhance the linked series identified through Crime Pattern Analysis, and it can also be used on Major Enquiries.

• Evaluation of raw information, turning it into intelligence and dealing with the 5 x 5 x 5 system of evaluation through exercises. Understanding how the evaluation impacts upon the graphical representation of data.

• Network Analysis. Using evaluated data to generate network charts for analysis, and techniques for the subsequent analysis.

• Inference Development and the application of inductive logic to generate intelligence led products. How the charting techniques are used for Inference Development.

• Flow Charting Techniques for Commodities and Activities. Commodity Flow Charting deals with what is being moved between those involved in the structure (typically money, stolen goods, drugs etc).

• Activity Flow deals with how a particular system works (for example the M.O. of a theft or fraud) and it identifies the dependency of each stage and critical path, and therefore identifies potential weak areas for enforcement intervention.

• Communications data. How to acquire it and what to do with it.

• Verbal and written dissemination.

• Sequence of Events. Dealing with both intelligence and evidential issues regarding all analytical products.

• The Legal Framework – including Disclosure, RIPA, HRA, PII, etc and appropriate completion of MG forms including statements for Court. Tasking issues, including self-tasking.

• Major exercises throughout the 10 days, including verbal and written dissemination of products.
